I bought the Mollusk scales to replace the G10 scales on my Benchmade 940. Let me tell you, they exceeded my expectations. The Mollusk scales are absolutely gorgeous. The pictures don’t do them justice. The fit and finish is outstanding. The texture feels amazing, plenty of grip. With the G10 scales, I felt the 940 was blade heavy. With the Mollusk scales, the balance is dead on. If you want to take your Benchmade 940 to the next level, get yourself a set of the Mollusk scales. You won’t be disappointed.
Good fit and finish !
I have a lot of knives and I carry a 940 exclusively. Been looking at Rockscale for some time… you have to catch these when they are available. (High demand). I first purchased the flat aluminum blast Ti (only ones available). I was immediately impressed by the fit and finish. I carried this knife for a week when I was notified the Mollusk was back in stock. After my first impression of their quality I could not help myself. Current carry is Aluminum blast Mollusk with matching back spacer and titanium screws. Worth every bit of the money I questioned spending. I have another competitors Ti scales, they are nice but they are not the mollusk. Plus US made!!!! C’mon.
My old companion is now something I sit and admire. The feel in hand is incredible. If you are on the fence… do it. You will not regret it.
Titanium Hatch Scales for Benchmade Osborne 940 Series - AB
Rockscale Designs was an easy choice for replacing the carbon fiber scales on my 940-1 with the S90v blade. I bought this knife for three reasons:
To use as a benchmark as I begin to learn more about knives,
I wanted a larger knife than my EDC to take into the woods when I forage.
I wanted a high-performance steel blade with edge retention and high corrosion resistance, as the knife takes abuse and often gets folded up a little dirty and wet, off and on throughout the day.
I love the blade on my 940. I do not like the handle. The carbon fiber is too light to balance the weight of the blade. It felt as if wanted to tip out of my hand if held loosely. Though not bad, it does not provide the greatest grip. I frequently handle the knife when wet and sometimes wearing gloves, so this was a significant issue for me.
Thinking metal would give more heft, I found Rockscale Designs and their Ti Hatch and Mollusk scales. I prefer the look of the Mollusk, but it was not available, so I bought the Hatch. Aesthetically, they both match my taste for the understated with a matte-like finish, neutral coloring and simple patterning. Whereas the checkerboard-ish carbon fiber detracts from the form of the knife, I think that the Mollusk pattern enhances the form and lends an extra measure of beauty. It is a hard act to follow, but the Hatch does it pretty well.
Additionally, the grooves provide friction for an excellent grip in many positions, wet or dry. It feels good in my hand and I had no issues with the grip while using the knife during a couple of rainy days. I once had the pleasure of holding a centuries-old katana with sharkskin wrapping the handle, giving it a slightly gritty feel. These scales remind me of that experience and with the improved balance, give the knife a confident feel that it lacked.
I have two small criticisms to make of this excellent product: I believe the rise running down the center of the scales could be a little taller, giving the thumb and fingers a little more purchase. I also believe the feel and look of the knife could be improved if the edge of the scale were eased over a little bit and the grooves followed this arc at constant depth. This would have the effect of making the scales less planar, more sculpted and overall, more attractive.
I exchanged a few emails while ordering the scales and some Ti screws. The responses were thoughtful and efficient. Stuff arrived promptly. These scales are expensive, but in my mind, a very good value at the same time. High quality work and professional service, what a beautiful balance!
